Holly Heights Application
IC INFORMATION;
Characters Name: Noda
Age: It’s a little complicated given that he’s dead, there’s no clear time given for his death in relation to the story, and the mechanics of this afterlife mean that people can arrive some time after their death. My best guess is 17, given that it’s his stated age pre-death and there’s no way to tell how much time has passed in the afterlife.
Canon: Angel Beats
Canon Point: Episode 10, after walking away from the soccer match.
Species: (dead) human
Gender: Male
Orientation: Heterosexual. He has an obvious crush on a girl and never displays romantic interest in men.
Appearance:
The purple one.
182 cm, and with his build ~72 kg should be about right. He’s very muscular. It’s probably all the axe-swinging.
Personality:
Imagine the “dumb muscle/stupid jock” trope made into a person, killed off when they’re a teenager, and then stuck in anime purgatory. That’s Noda.
Noda’s claim to fame within the SSS is that he’s impulsive, hot-tempered, impertinent and really, really dumb. This summary of him is… exactly spot on. There’s no getting around it: Noda is simple-minded. He doesn’t try to dismiss claims of his stupidity or incompetence, never tries to prove his intelligence, and doesn’t even seem to care when addressed as a moron. He fails to pick up when he’s being made fun of and when he’s being manipulated, instead taking things at face value instead of reading between the lines. He’s so simple that he’s subdued through sheer confusion at someone reciting the digits of pi at him, and is killed multiple times by traps he knew were laid down. However, this simple-mindedness can come to his advantage when he’s willing to go along with the SSS’s various silly operations without much complaint about the logic behind them, and when he needs to be manipulated into doing something due to his being stubborn about it.
It’s really easy for Noda to get riled up over something. Starting from declaring Otonashi as his rival the moment he meets him and killing him 100 times in a row with a halberd, Noda consistently shows that when he’s going to do something, he’s going to do something with his full force. When he isn’t immediately killed off at the start of an operation due to obliviousness or terrible luck and actually is motivated to do something, he’s a force to be reckoned with. He enjoys fighting; whether it’s with his “rival” or giant shadow monsters, he’s eager to oblige. Likewise, he’s quick to violence and also quick to use the threat of it to get people to do whatever needs to be done for the operation, or more accurately, for Yuri. This is a guy who thinks it’s appropriate to bring an axe to a school festival in order to win an athletic competition and is only dissuaded after being yelled at, believes that the best way to keep someone quiet is shoving the tip of his halberd down their throat, and is more than willing to axe someone for trying to stop him from sleeping on school desks. Still, this doesn’t mean that Noda is a sadist or enjoys seeing people die or maimed. Indeed, he’s just as shocked as the rest of his comrades when they witness a particularly violent death and doesn’t seem to enjoy the fact that he kills people so much as he enjoys fighting and finds using the threat of violence to get what he wants useful.
However, when he isn’t getting riled up over a “rival”, a mission or sports, Noda is actually quiet and rather withdrawn. He tends to sit away from the group during meetings and keeps quiet unless prompted to speak by a question or by someone disrespecting Yuri. He’s rather anti-social when not on a mission or required to interact with his “classmates”, instead preferring to spend time alone. If he determines that a mission isn’t worth his time or is useless, he will refuse to participate and instead spend the time doing his own thing. Besides this, as he lacks the awareness to realize that his classmates probably don’t want to hang out with him much due to his personality, his being alone often is probably due to his own withdrawn tendencies. While it’s only mentioned in passing in the drama CDs, this anti-social and withdrawn facet of his personality may be due to residual habits gained from his former life as a hikkikomori.
Even so, this doesn’t mean that Noda is incapable of forming bonds with people or interacting with them as a group. When he does get involved with the group’s activities, such as during baseball games and impromptu soccer matches, he plays along (fairly) well and sees the objective through- and often finds himself having fun while doing so, whether he admits it or not. While he may say that he’s only doing something for Yuri’s sake, it’s more than often that he gets caught up in the activity at hand and gets very invested in a good outcome for the entire team, so much so that he’s willing to fight to exhaustion against shadow monsters to ensure a win. When he does have respect or affection for someone (basically only Yuri) he is incredibly loyal and devoted to them, as well as willing to openly state as such. In both the prequel novels and in the drama cds, Noda is very open about his affections, as well as his desire to make the object of said affections (again, Yuri) happy.
Abilities:
Besides being, well, dead and therefore immortal by virtue of not being able to die permanently again (a power rendered moot by the resurrection rule in Holly Heights), Noda is a normal human. However, he is exceptionally talented physically, in both combat with a halberd and to a lesser extent a handgun (when his idiocy or sheer bad luck isn’t getting in the way) or in sports.
